True to the books’ title the Chelsea is legendary as well as unique artist community home to some of America’s finest most radical artists, from Edgar Lee Masters to Bob Dylan. Sherill Tippins‘new book pays homage to a landmark in American culture that has often been overlooked if not forgotten. Surprisingly, Inside the Dream Palace is the first in depth account of that great institution. It is attention that is well deserved as the Chelsea reflects an “old weird America” (to use Greil Marcus’ term) that used to exist as part of the country’s impressive counterculture.
